Escanaba manufacturing plant damaged in fire. What happened at Race Ramps

Escanaba manufacturing facility Race Ramps was damaged by fire Thursday afternoon, Oct. 31, local fire officials said.

While the plant, 2003 23rd Ave. North, was heavily damaged, no one was injured, the Escanaba Department of Public Safety said in a release. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:13 p.m. Thursday after the fire was reported. Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions when they arrived, the release said.

“Due to the nature of the material stored inside, the incident was quickly upgraded, bringing in mutual aid” from multiple area departments, the release said.

“Firefighters worked for several hours to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to many nearby buildings,” the release said.

City officials said some residents on the north side of the city could experience “dirty” water in the wake of the fire. If their water is unclear, they should run the tap for 5 to 10 minutes.

In addition to the department of public safety, firefighters from Ford River Bark River and Escanaba townships, and Gladstone took part in the effort. Also assisting were DTE, the DNR, Delta County sheriff’s deputies, Michigan State Police, Red Cross, Rampart, Gene’s Towing, Escanaba Public Schools transportation staff, National Weather Service, Delta County emergency manager, Escanaba electric, water and public works, and Delta County Central Dispatch.
