A Hornell woman was charged with multiple felonies after police were alerted to a Facebook Live broadcast of a woman lighting paper towels on fire and placing them into a hole in the drywall of her apartment.
Hornell police responded to 52 ½ Fulton St. in the early morning hours Oct. 22, Chief Ted Murray said. Officers arrived on scene and quickly extinguished a fire in the apartment. The Hornell Fire Department was also called to the scene and helped clear the building of any fire concerns within the walls of the multi-unit apartment house, Murray said.
Following an investigation, Angela Smith, 42, was charged with second-degree arson and first-degree reckless endangerment, both felonies, along with criminal mischief. Smith, who resided in the apartment, was arraigned at Steuben County CAP and sent to the Steuben County Jail with bail set at $1,000.
Hornell Codes Officer Bud Burdett was called to the scene due to the fire damage and declared the apartment unsuitable for further occupancy.
