Trooper, 2 others injured in I-96 crash. What police say happened

A Michigan State Police trooper’s vehicle was struck by a motorist who lost control of their own vehicle on westbound Interstate 96, according to a post from MSP’s Second District on X, injuring the trooper and both people in the second vehicle.

The Metro South trooper, who was not identified in the post, was investigating a one-car “preventable” crash on the left shoulder of I-96 near Fullterton Avenue at about 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, when the crash took place. The trooper was injured and was transported to a local hospital by Detroit Fire/EMS for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The 55-year-old driver who struck the patrol vehicle, and their passenger, who also were not identified, were both transported to the local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the MSP said.

“It is important for drivers to remember to slow down in wet weather,” Lt. Mike Shaw said. “This particular driver was not only driving too fast for road conditions, he also had three of his four tires worn below the wear bars which also led him to lose control and crash.”

The freeway was previously closed for the investigation, MSP said in the post.
