Specific contract buyout details for Jonathan Smith at Michigan State

Michigan State’s football program has seemingly hit rock bottom following an embarrassing, blowout loss to UCLA in front of it’s homecoming crowd. Ultimately, it was a disgusting brand of football, and fans are fed up.

On social media, there is a ton of talk about the job security Jonathan Smith may or may not have in East Lansing. Only in year two, it feels like it could be a premature firing, but at this point, it feels like the only thing the Spartans can do to rectify it’s once storied program.

Thanks to Spartans Illustrated publisher David Harns, contract buyout details have been made clear, and if the Spartans do make the move, the monetary details are clear.

The university would pay liquidated damages as equal monthly installments for the remaining term of Smith’s contract. Harns then noted that in a rough estimate, it would be 62 monthly payments of $509,000 from December 2025 thru January 2031.
