Is the Ryder Cup a major championship in golf?
While it is not an individual event, the magnitude of the team event has been elevated to a point where many players equate a Ryder Cup win to winning one of the men’s game’s four major championships. That certainly seems to be true for members of the European team, and it seems increasingly the same for members of the United States team
With the Ryder Cup being played this week in New York, here’s what you need to know about the matches.
The 2025 Ryder Cup
What: the 45th annual Ryder Cup matches between professionals from the United States and Europe
When: Sept. 26-28
Where: The Black Course at Bethpage State Park Golf Course on Long Island, N.Y.
Current Cup holder: Europe
All-time record: The United States holds a 27-15 winning mark
U.S. team: Captain Keegan Bradley; vice captains Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Gary Woodland; players Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley, Harris English, Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, Sam Burns and Bryson DeChambeau.
European team: Captain Luke Donald: vice captains Thomas Bjorn, Jose Maria Olazabal, Edoardo Molinari, Francesco Molinari, Alex Noren; players Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Format: The first two days consist of four foursomes, or alternate shot, matches, and four four-ball, or better-ball matches. That means 16 points are available in the first two days. Sunday features 12 singles matches for a total of 28 points. Europe holds the Cup and must score 14 points to retain the Cup. The United States must win 14 1/2 points to regain the cup
Television: Friday, USA Network 4 a.m.-3 p.m., with featured matches on Peacock. Golf Channel takes over from 3 to 5 p.m.; Saturday NBC 4 a.m.-3 p.m., with featured matches on Peacock. Golf Channel takes over from 3 to 5 p.m.; Sunday, NBC 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Golf Channel featured singles matches to be determined on Peacock.
