PETOSKEY — Construction continues on Howard Street in Petoskey, though it will be seeing a season-long pause soon.
Howard Street construction has been broken up into phases, with work most recently taking place on the stretch between Jennings Avenue and Sheridan Street.
According to an update from city manager Shane Horn during the Monday, Sept. 15 Petoskey City Council meeting, construction on that section is making good process, with all water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer completed. Additionally, nearly all curb, gutter and sidewalks are complete, with the exception of a small piece of sidewalk on the northeast quadrant, which will be completed this week after DTE finishes a small gas main repair.
New right-of-way trees have been planted with topsoil and seeding completed, and on Saturday, Sept. 13, paving was completed on the segment from Jennings to Sheridan and has since been open for all traffic.
Horn said that construction has begun on Washington Street from Petoskey to Howard streets, with pavement and concrete removals started so that sanitary sewer work can begin. The paving is supposed to be completed by Nov. 1 before seasonal limitations become a concern.
Construction work on Howard Street between Fulton Street and Jennings Avenue will be moved to next spring, as officials are concerned wet and cold weather will begin to impact the work.
“We will have a top course of asphalt that will go down from Grove to Fulton,” Horn said. “Right now that just has a base course of asphalt that will be topped off when we finish the Washington Street area before we close the project for the fall and winter.”
