GAYLORD — According to the Gaylord Police Department, a crowd of about 400 attended a vigil on Tuesday, Sept. 16 to mourn the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, the founder of the advocacy group Turning Point USA, was shot by a rifle-wielding gunman during an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. Utah officials Tuesday formally charged Tyler Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering and the commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray said he would seek the death penalty.
“This will be a time for our community to come together in faith, prayer and unity as we remember Charlie’s life, his courage and the values he stood for. We will reflect, lift his family and loved ones in prayer, and stand together with resolve and hope,” said a Facebook post announcing the Gaylord vigil. The hosts were Gabbie Mason and Jada Gray.
Among those attending the event were state Sen. John Damoose (R-Harbor Springs), who also addressed the crowd. Gaylord Police Chief Frank Claeys said there were no incidents during the vigil.
