Miami football is midway through an unofficial Sunshine State tournament. After easily dispatching Bethune-Cookman and bouncing South Florida from its short-lived time in the rankings, the Hurricanes welcome the reeling Florida Gators (as well as College GameDay) into Hard Rock Stadium this weekend.
At 1-2, UF has bigger problems than just No. 6 Miami on the schedule. The Gators are on a two-game losing streak after a 20-10 loss at No. 4 LSU last week, a game in which DJ Lagway threw five interceptions. It doesn’t get any easier with No. 7 Texas and No. 10 Texas A&M up after this, as this could be the beginning of the end for Florida coach Billy Napier.
UM, on the other hand, is 3-0 for the third year in a row under Mario Cristobal and looks geared up for a run at the College Football Playoff with new quarterback Carson Beck. They’ll have to keep it up through the end of the in-state slate Oct. 4 at No. 9 Florida State.

Miami vs Florida prediction
Florida is in the midst of one of the most brutal stretches in recent memory, but it hasn’t been all bad for the Gators despite a disappointing start. The defense ranks among the best in the country, allowing just 12.67 points per game (tied for 26th in FBS), 177.3 passing yards per game (42nd) and 87 rush yards per game (23rd). Opponents have converted just 26.2% of their third downs (20th) and have reached the red zone just six times (T-12th). Carson Beck and the new-look Hurricanes offense looked great in the first half and change against an underwhelming Notre Dame defense but stumbled after that; this could be the toughest unit UM faces this season.
Fortunately for Miami fans, things should be easier on the other side of the ball. Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor have run wild on offensive lines to start the season, and there’s no reason to think Florida’s shaky crew can slow them down. DJ Lagway has completed 71% of his passes with five TDs, but he also leads the SEC with six interceptions. LSU and Miami have forced the same amount of turnovers this season (6). It’s hard to see the Gators scoring enough points to secure the upset. Prediction: Miami 23, Florida 10
