Three people from Arizona, including an 11-year-old boy, were killed Monday evening when their SUV collided head-on with an 18-wheeler on Interstate 40 in Oldham County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash happened around 6:35 p.m. Sept. 8, about one mile west of Vega.
Troopers said a 2024 Volvo truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling eastbound when the driver, 56-year-old Abdinur Hassan of Columbus, Ohio, failed to maintain a single lane. The truck veered onto the improved shoulder and struck the back of an unoccupied Freightliner semi-trailer parked on the shoulder.
The Volvo then crossed the eastbound lanes, went through the center median and entered the westbound lanes, where it collided with a 2022 Honda Pilot carrying three people from Mesa, Arizona.
The Honda’s driver, 62-year-old Ronald Momyer, and a passenger, 61-year-old Julie Momyer, were pronounced dead at the scene. An 11-year-old boy in the vehicle was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo and later flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he died from his injuries.
Hassan was not injured. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation.
