LYON TWP. — Extra Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputies were on site at Millennium Middle School Monday after threats were posted on social media over the weekend.
South Lyon Community Schools’ administrators learned around 6 a.m. Sunday that students had posted messages, including: “I bring gun to school?”, “…meet in the 8th grade bathroom 2nd period” and “I got the ammo,” according to a letter sent to school families from the district.
Students who saw the posts reported them to school officials, who contacted the district’s director of safety and security and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies met with the students and families involved, the letter said, and the students who made the threats are not allowed on any South Lyon Community Schools property while the investigation continues.
It was not clear how many students were involved.
“In an overabundance of caution, there will be extra OCSO officers on site tomorrow morning,” the letter from Superintendent Steve Archibald and Millennium Middle School Principal Kelly Gallagher stated.
The district noted all threats are taken seriously, even when students later claim they were joking.
“Simply stating ‘I’m just kidding, I didn’t mean it, or it was a joke,’ does not impact the seriousness of the situation, the expected law enforcement contact, nor the disciplinary referral process,” the letter said.
School leaders also thanked the students who came forward and urged parents to continue monitoring social media use and encouraging children to report concerns to trusted adults.
“I want to commend the family who brought this situation to our attention so that school officials and law enforcement could intervene in a timely manner,” Archibald said in an email to Hometown Life. “All of our students and staff members deserve to be emotionally and physically safe at school.”
Archibald said the district has “no tolerance” for behavior that interferes with maintaining a desirable school environment.
“Individuals who cross this line by making a threat against a school will find themselves facing significant school and potential legal consequences,” he said.
