Keys for the offense for the Buccaneers against the Falcons in Week 1

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers open their 2025 season against the Atlanta Falcons, the team’s offense faces challenges due to injuries and a new coordinator, Josh Grizzard. To come away with a win, here are three key areas they must focus on:

Protect Baker Mayfield Without Tristan Wirfs

Left tackle Tristan Wirfs is on the active roster but won’t play Week 1 as he continues his recovery. That puts added responsibility on the rest of the offensive line, especially right tackle Luke Goedeke, who just signed a big extension. Keeping Mayfield upright and giving him time to make decisions is crucial against a Falcons defense that boasts a multitude of pass rushers eager to disrupt. Early protection will help the offense find a rhythm and avoid negative plays.

Distribute the Ball Quickly and Effectively

With wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr not yet returning from injury, and Jalen McMillan sidelined until late in the season, Mayfield needs to get the ball out quickly to his available weapons. Mike Evans remains a reliable target, while tight end Cade Otton and rookies Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson will need to step up. Quick passes and smart route combinations can neutralize Atlanta’s aggressive secondary and keep drives moving.

Establish a Balanced Run Game

Running back Rachaad White’s status is uncertain due to a groin injury, making Bucky Irving’s role even more important. Irving’s ability to contribute both as a runner and receiver can keep the Falcons’ defense off balance. A strong running game will open up play-action opportunities and reduce pressure on Mayfield, helping the offense sustain drives and finish with touchdowns instead of settling for field goals.
