Will it be cold on Labor Day 2025? Long-range forecast calls for cool, pleasant weekend

While temperatures in Michigan this week will be on the chilly side in the morning, Labor Day weekend should be sunny and pleasant to be outside, weather forecasts suggest.

Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, a federal holiday granting many workers a three-day weekend, and marking the unofficial end to summer.

The fall-like temperatures in Michigan appear likely to remain steady into early next week, the National Weather Service says, though according to both AccuWeather and the National Weather Service, Labor Day is forecast to have sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures.

This week, some areas in northern Michigan could see the first frost of the season. The weather service issued a hazardous weather outlook because of the possibility of frost early Wednesday.

“A colder night is expected in the interior of northern lower Michigan (Tuesday night),” the NWS said. “Patchy frost is a distinct possibility in the usual cold spots, including Atlanta, Mio, Grayling, and Houghton Lake.”

Areas in northern Michigan reached the 40s early Tuesday morning. Portions of the western Upper Peninsula also reached the 40s early Tuesday and will dip into the lower 40s again Wednesday morning with rain predicted.

The weekend forecast, as of Tuesday, Aug. 26, says the Lower Peninsula should see highs in the 70s, with some northern areas seeing highs in the upper 60s. Grand Rapids’ long-range forecast shows the warmest high of 81 degrees on Labor Day, according to the weather service.

In the Upper Peninsula, highs will be in the upper 60s to 70s, with Sault Ste. Marie possibly reaching 76 degrees on Labor Day.

“Warmer air may begin to migrate eastward, favoring increasing chances for near- to above-normal temperatures over parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast,” the weather service said in its long-range forecast.
