Former Longhorns QB lands starting job in Pac-12

Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy is now the starting QB at his third college football program. The former Quinn Ewers backup, who started at Duke last season, has been named the starter for Oregon State.

Murphy was Ewers’ backup in 2023. He was ahead of Arch Manning on the depth chart and started two games that season. He won them both, but he played poorly against Kansas State.

After a great 2024 season for the Blue Devils, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound redshirt sophomore was a surprise entry into the NCAA transfer portal. Murphy, who has two years of eligibility left, led Duke to a 9-3 record.

After entering the portal in December, Murphy visited Auburn and Kentucky before landing in Corvallis. The California native considered Oregon State when he entered the portal at Texas, before ultimately choosing Duke. He ended up a Beaver anyway.

“He’s way more comfortable with the offense having gone through spring. And really that’s all it is for him. He’s got all the physical ability to get it done. Now it’s just running plays over and over, doing those reads over and over, so he’s sharp by the time we line up against Cal.” – Oregon State head coach Trent Bray

The Beavers with Murphy under center open the season hosting Cal at 9:30 p.m. CT on Aug. 30.
