No more tortilla toss for Texas Tech football fans, Big 12 ADs say | Report

The long-held tradition of throwing tortillas onto the field in Jones AT&T Stadium may be coming to an end for Texas Tech football fans.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported Thursday that Big 12 Conference athletic directors voted 15-1 “to solidify an existing game management policy related to the throwing of items onto the playing surface,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Dellenger added that teams will receive a warning for the first two violations, while three or more instances could result in 15-yard penalties.

Dellenger noted how this specifically targets Texas Tech in a follow-up post.

“The move most impacts Texas Tech,” Dellenger wrote, “whose fans hold a tradition of tossing tortillas onto the field, most notably during opening kickoff.”

Texas Tech fans have been throwing tortillas onto the field for decades. While the school does not technically permit the practice, several individuals are placed along the sidelines to act as a cleanup crew, snagging all the tortillas that dot the perimeter of the field.

Fans toss tortillas on every Tech kickoff during a game, usually following a scoring drive. Most tortillas can be seen flying from the crowd on the opening kickoff of games.
