Oriskany teammates Nick Hays and Eddie Wright have been selected as the New York State Sportswriters Association’s co-players of the year for Class D high school baseball in all-state selections released this week.
Hays, the Skyhawks’ senior catcher and leadoff hitter, and Wright, their junior shortstop and pitcher, led Oriskany to Section III’s first state baseball championship in seven years. The Skyhawks, Class D finalists in the 2024 state playoffs and third-time sectional champions in their current run, defeated Section II North Warren 9-2 in the June 14 championship game in Binghamton to complete a 19-1 season.
Joining the Oriskany teammates as class players of the year were Jayden Stroman from AAA Patchogue-Medford, Michael Oliveto from AA Hauppauge, Scott Lynch from B Mechanicville and Hunter Fales from C Saratoga Catholic. Pittsford-Mendon’s Cam Barbulean and Miller Place’s Nick Frusco shared the Class A award.
The Skyhawks had two additional players honored in three tiers of Class D all-state selections. Sophomore outfielder and pitcher Dean Koenig, the starting pitcher in the state championship game, was selected for the second team, and versatile senior Sean Graziano was a third-team pick.
Sophomore pitcher Darin Buchanan represented Section III on the Class D first team, while junior Blair Mulcahy and sophomore Brennan Wilson from sectional runner-up McGraw were second- and third-team picks.
North Warren placed Owen Scheafer on the second team and Wyatt Jennings on the third. Damon Potter from Fillmore, the team Oriskany beat in its state semifinal, and Luke Richards from Elmira-Notre Dame, the Skyhawks’ regional opponent, were first-team selections.
Several other area players earned all-state selections.
