Former UCLA quarterback impresses Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel has been impressed with former UCLA Bruins quarterback Joey Aguilar, according to Vols Wire.

Aguilar has been battling for the starting quarterback role since transferring to the Vols. No quarterback seems to have a leg up in the battle. However, the former Bruin did receive a heap of praise for his understanding of the offense. Heupel told reporters of his progress after a two hour scrimmage on Aug. 9. “With what we’re doing offensively, in our installs from protections, to run game, controlling it and what he’s seeing on the other side of the football, how multiple we’ve been here in the early part of training camp, I really like, overall, what he’s done,” Heupel said. “There’s still more for him within the structure and the details of it, but I like what he’s done.”

Although Aguilar has impressed his new coach, the lack of any quarterback having an edge up in the competition leaves his positional status up in the air. The Bruins, on the other hand, have left no doubt on who their starting quarterback will be: redshirt sophomore Nico Iamaleava.

The Vols transfer will undoubtedly be the starting quarterback for their upcoming season and it’s be shown, whether it’s from excitement from his head coach or the three preseason award watchlists that he has been named to.

Aguilar and Iamaleava’s names will continuously be tied to one another throughout this season. Aguilar will have a chance to prove he can be the Vols’ starting quarterback and take Iamaleava’s mantle for the Vols.
