Jaguars' QB Trevor Lawrence evaluates play and progress of TE Brenton Strange

As both Trevor Lawrence and Brenton Strange get more comfortable in the new-look Jacksonville Jaguars offense, the chemistry between the two in the passing game continues to grow.

“Me seeing him quicker, getting the ball to him in some different scenarios, where maybe in the spring I was not dishing it to him, getting backsided or doing whatever,” Lawrence said after a recent practice via Jaguars on SI. “I think getting more comfortable seeing him in different spots in this scheme and knowing what to expect, how he’s going to run certain routes.”

Following Wednesday’s training camp practice, Michael DiRocco of ESPN wrote in his training camp takeaways that Strange has been one of the “most consistent offensive performers” throughout training camp.

One of the standout plays from Strange on Wednesday came during a two-minute period where he made a one-handed catch with linebacker Devin Lloyd in coverage. That catch eventually resulted in a Jaguars’ touchdown several plays later.

At the top of the Jaguars’ tight end depth chart, Strange will play a key role in the passing game this season. Looking back at the 2024 Tampa Bay offense under Liam Coen, Cade Otton had the ninth-most targets of any tight end last season.

And as Lawrence referenced, Strange isn’t only going to see more targets, but how he’s utilized in the passing game will change as well, with him impacting more parts of the field compared to what he was asked to do previously.

Along with Strange’s presence in the passing game, he also adds versatility, able to line up across the formation and go in motion. Strange is a capable run-blocker as well.

This do-it-all play-style can add a level of unpredictability to the Jaguars’ offense with Strange able to fill so many roles, making it difficult for defenses to decipher what’s coming. This not only can create opportunities for Strange but for his teammates as well.

“He plays really hard, he’s a really good blocker, and then what he can do in space, too. He doesn’t get enough credit for how good of a route runner he is,” Lawrence said. “Very physical, great after the catch. So, he’s going to be a problem for us.”
