As Texas lawmakers gaveled in during the first special session of the 89th Legislature, one big-ticket item was addressed immediately — redistricting.
As stipulated in Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s proclamation for the special called session in Austin, one of the special items to be addressed by lawmakers was “legislation that provides a revised congressional redistricting plan in light of constitutional concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Justice.”

In order to fulfill this item, Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, formed the House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting.
According to the speakers’ proclamation, 21 representatives have been appointed to the committee whose jurisdiction is over “all matters pertaining to congressional districts.”

The committee is composed of nine Democrats and 12 Republicans and will be chaired by Vasut, with Rosenthal serving as vice chair.

Late July 21, after hours of debate on the rules and guidelines of the formation of the Senate Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting, the committee was formed.
The following senators were assigned to the committee:
King will serve as chair, with Creighton as vice chair.
