A suspect is in custody for the shooting that injured two Milwaukee police officers on June 26.
Here’s what we know:
Who did the Milwaukee Police Department arrest?
The Milwaukee Police Department has arrested 22-year-old Tremaine Jones in connection with the shooting.
Jones was not identified by officials in a June 27 statement announcing the arrest, but two sources confirmed the name to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel typically does not name suspects who have not been charged with a crime unless they are a public figure. The news organization is naming the suspect in this case because of the high profile nature of the incident.
Police have provided no further details about the suspect.
Has Tremaine Jones been charged?
The suspect was arrested at 2:15 a.m. without incident. Charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office, according to police.
Does Tremaine Jones have a criminal record?
According to court records, Jones was arrested when he was 17 in 2021. He faced charges for being inside a stolen vehicle and later fleeing from officers, which records show were later dismissed as part of a deferred prosecution agreement.
When and where did the shooting take place?
The shooting took place about 9:30 p.m. June 26 in an alley in the 2200 block of North 24th Place.
Officers were responding to reports of a suspect firing shots near the area of North 25th Street and West Garfield Avenue, according to police. Officials say neither returned fire at the suspect.
Who was injured in the shooting?
Two Milwaukee police officers were injured in the shooting. A 32-year-old male officer is in critical condition and a 29-year-old male officer has nonfatal injuries.
Both work in Police District Two and have about six years of service each.
How many police officers have been shot in Milwaukee in 2025?
This is at least the third time an officer has been shot in Milwaukee in 2025. Another officer was shot earlier this month on the 4800 block of North 46th Street.
