Netflix’s record-breaking hit K-drama series “Squid Game” has returned for its third and final season early on Friday, June 27.
The dystopian drama is about desperate people competing in childhood games to win roughly 50 billion South Korean Won (about $37 million). Except that its participants don’t know the game’s stakes when they enter, with all players being killed at some point during the game until one winner remains.
The show specifically follows protagonist Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a former gambling addict who attempts to stop the game after winning it the first time. Officials behind the show say this upcoming season will revolve around Gi-hun as he “returns to the game arena and faces the challenges ahead.”

For those who need a refresher on how the last season ended in December, the finale episode ended on a cliffhanger as Gi-hun attempted to rally his fellow competitors against the game makers.
“His plan seems to go well, as the rebels almost make it to the control center of the arena. But, the Front Man — who spends much of Season 2 hiding in plain sight as Player 001 — double crosses Gi-hun and crushes the uprising. In a devastating final twist of the knife, the Front Man kills Gi-hun’s best friend Jung-bae,” Netflix’s Tudum writes.
Season three will pick up after Gi-hun is placed back into the game and In-ho resumes his role as Front Man.

Is season 3 of ‘Squid Game’ the final season?
Yes, it is. According to Tudum, the series director, writer, and executive producer, Hwang Dong-hyuk, confirmed the news last year in an open letter to fans.
Hwang recently told Variety that he never intended to make a second or third season due to the challenges involved. He added that he lost eight to nine teeth throughout the process.
“I’m so exhausted. I’m so tired. In a way, I have to say, I’m so sick of ‘Squid Game,’” Hwang shared. “I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something. So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix.”
