Find out when iconic Des Moines supper club Jesse's Embers is open for lunch

Carter Annett brought back a long-time favorite at the iconic Des Moines supper club Jesse’s Embers — lunch.

Before the pandemic, the steak and seafood restaurant on Ingersoll Avenue offered lunch, with a shortened menu of Jesse’s Embers favorites. Annett, who bought the restaurant in April from longtime owners Marty Scarpino and Deena Edelstein, had lunch on his radar since he took over.

“I didn’t want to do it before I got this new system in place, because there’s a lot of training to do with that,” he said, referring to an electronic POS system that brought ordering from handwritten paper slips to electronic checks. “And you know, honestly, I’m still trying to learn as much as I can about the dinner service. I didn’t want to double up on my workload, essentially.”

In May, Annett hoped to have lunch back by mid-June. After a brief vacation, it returned on June 25.

What’s on the menu for lunch at Jesse’s Embers?

Think of the lunch menu at Jesse’s Embers as an abbreviated version of the dinner menu. When Annett took over the restaurant, he said he didn’t plan to change anything on the menu. He kept the same dishes using the same recipes and ingredients.

Shrimp cocktail, $12: This comes with six shrimp and a zesty sauce.

Cajun shrimp, $13: This sautéed version of shrimp done in butter and beer comes with French bread.

Onion rings, $8 small, $10 large: This iconic staple features thin-sliced onions that are breaded in-house.

Garbage salad, $16: The menu calls this “a bowl of happiness” with its mix of capicola, salami, turkey, artichoke hearts, olives, and veggies topped with shrimp. This is a meal on its own.

Fried walleye, $18: This sandwich version of a supper club classic comes with pasta salad or fries.

Reuben or Rachel, $16: Choose between pastrami or turkey for this sandwich slathered in Thousand Island dressing and topped with sauerkraut on rye bread.

Emberburger, $16, or $17 with cheese: This classic dish features a half-pound of sirloin beef.

Open-pit French dip, $17: Jesse’s Embers uses thinly sliced top sirloin on this dish.

London broil, $18: This riff on a French dip features roast beef.

Eddy’s special, $18: Essentially a rarebit burger, with a half-pound sirloin patty smothered in cheese sauce, bacon, and onions.

Ember’s 8, $22: A classic, this 8-ounce top sirloin is a supper club staple.

Jesse’s slow-cooked ribs, $18: Choose the onion rings to go with this dish slathered in barbecue sauce made in-house.

Yellowfin tuna, $21: This comes topped with a spicy tomato glaze.

Beer-battered shrimp, $18: This dish features six shrimp and a choice of side.
