The 2025 college basketball season will feature several new head coaches, including Bucky McMillan, the new head coach at Texas A&M, who has all but rebuilt the program this offseason after landing a dozen players from the transfer portal. While the Aggies are not considered a Top 25 team just yet, the NCAA Tournament is not out of the realm of possibility ahead of McMillan’s inaugural campaign.
Under McMillan’s fast-paced system, which will require offensive efficiency, especially at the free-throw line and 3-point range. Compared to former head coach Buzz Williams, who emphasized defense and rebounding during his six years at the helm, this is a stark contrast that should benefit the Aggies’ future, given that Texas A&M has not advanced to an Elite 8 since the program’s inception.
On paper, Texas A&M’s 2025 roster isn’t complete, as McMillan is poised to add two more players to fill out the 15-man roster. Still, right now, there is more than enough star power to produce results next season, headlined by former Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako and former Texas Tech/Creighton point guard Pop Issacs, who are poised to lead the Aggies in several categories next season.
On Tuesday, ESPN Bracketology expert Joe Lunardi released his updated 2026 NCAA Tournament projections, based on the changes made this offseason. While the Aggies are not yet safely in the field of 64, they are listed as one of four teams in the Last Four In, alongside Iowa, Miami, and LSU.
Texas A&M’s standing in the always competitive SEC is somewhere in the middle before the season begins, but this is mainly due to the roster returning only 0% of its 2024 production, which is always taken into account when rankings or tournament projections are released.
This summer, McMillan and his 2025 roster are working hard to get into elite shape this offseason to be ready to take on his system and make a run to the NCAA Tournament.
