COSHOCTON − Fireworks have been a central part of the celebration of our nation’s independence for nearly 250 years.

Founding Father John Adams predicted their importance to the event in a letter to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776, according to history.com:

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival … It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more,” Adams wrote.

The first fireworks display in the United States in celebration of Independence Day was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. Boston also had a fireworks display on the same day, according to history.com.

When are fireworks planned?

June 28

● 10 p.m. at Wood’s Tall Timber Resort in New Philadelphia. Admission starts at 4 p.m. for $10 with other activities available.

● Thunder Over Holmes County at dusk at the Old Holmes County Fairgrounds in Millersburg. Activities are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. through downtown including inflatables, children’s games, food and more.

July 2

● 10 p.m. at Geller Park in Heath

July 3

● Dusk at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Anything Blue, a blues band from Newark, will play at 7 p.m.

● 9:30 p.m. at Buckeye Lake State Park

● 10 p.m. at the Newark Campus of Ohio State/Central Ohio Technical College

July 4

● Dusk at Killing Tree Winery in Dresden

● Dusk at Ariel Foundation Park in Mount Vernon

● Dusk at Zane’s Landing Park in Zanesville

● 10 p.m. July 4 at Cambridge City Park

July 5

● 10 p.m. at Atwood Lake Park in Mineral City

● 10 p.m. at Seneca Lake Park in Senecaville

● 10 p.m. at Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia
