Celebrate the summer solstice

The summer solstice on Friday, June 20 marks the longest day of the year.

If you happen to be on Mackinac Island that day, you can join a Mackinac State Historic Parks naturalist at 3 p.m. on the deck of the Milliken Nature Center at Arch Rock for a special summer solstice stroll.

The walk is set to be about 1.5 miles, and the group will explore the plants, animals and geological features of Mackinac Island’s North Woods along the way.

Northland Players: Summer Youth Theater present “The Lion King Jr.”

Simba, Nala and the rest of the cast of “The Lion King” will be on stage this weekend at the Cheboygan Opera House as the Northland Players: Summer Youth Theater presents “The Lion King Jr.”

Through the summer youth theater program, local young performers rehearsed for three weeks and learned a wide range of new theatrical skills — such as mask-making and puppetry — for the show.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for students.

Cars and boats in Bay Harbor

Hundreds of unique, one-of-a-kind cars and boats will be on display, including a rare collection of every 1957 Ford model ever built.

There is free parking and free admission for the festival.

Cartooning for kids

The Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie is hosting a cartooning workshop with Maureen Shelleau from 12:30-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

The workshop is geared towards tweens and teens ages 11-18. They will learn animation and cartooning techniques with Shelleau, a former Disney animator.

Registration is required and there are limited spots available.
