Section 9 girls win eight gold medals at state track and field championships

Section 9 female athletes produced one gold medal on Friday and seven more on Saturday at the New York State Federation track and field championships at Middletown High School on June 13-14.

Junior Ella Michelitch of Minisink Valley established herself as the state’s top all-around athlete, running away to a 249-point victory in the five-discipline pentathlon; her 3,527 point total was good for Class A gold as well. Laila Logan of Goshen was 17th overall but fourth in Class B.

Junior Anderson Farina of Cornwall improved her best by four inches (12-3), winning Fed silver and Class B gold.

Friday highlights

Kingston senior Daniella Johnson finished behind Megan Ewers of Medgar Evers but her shot put throw of 37 feet, 8.75 inches was the tops among public school athletes in Class A.

Furman finished eighth (9:52.65) in the 3,000 meters – she earned Class C silver.

In the 400 hurdles, Clark took silver in Class A (61.042) and Riccardi did the same in Class B (63.70).

The Goshen girls 400 relay of Daniella Grant, Larianna Bala, Joy Sawyer and Olivia Sawyer took Class B silver (48.43).

Participating athletes come from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association; New York City’s Public Schools Athletic League; the Catholic High School Athletic Association; and, the Association of Independent Schools.

Most events were conducted within the three classes (by size): Class A, B and C. Several long-distance track and field events were run in a combined Federation format, with class scoring split out. This year, there was no additional round (after the class events) for long and triple jumps, shot put and discus, so Federation medals were handed out following a merge of all results.
