Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 5:18 p.m. crash west of Ellettsville and found two vehicles in the roadway that had collided.

One driver, from Spencer, died at the scene of the crash, according to a sheriff’s office news release. Their name wasn’t released Friday night pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the other vehicle involved, 62-year-old Cindy Bentley of Gosport, suffered serious injuries. Rescue workers extricated her from the wreckage, and she was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she later died, police said.

The two-lane highway was closed until 8:30 p.m. Friday for clean-up and accident reconstruction. Deputies directed traffic around the crash site for more than three hours.

Ellettsville’s police and fire departments, Bean Blossom Township Fire Department, IU Health Lifeline, Owen County EMS and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office were at the scene.
