There will be a funeral service at 2 p.m. June 8 at Leslie Middle School, 400 Kimball St., to honor the life of 14-year-old Damian Brown, according to Vickers Leslie Funeral Home’s online obituary. Damian’s family will receive visitors from 2 -5 p.m. June 7 at Vickers Leslie Funeral Home, 109 N. Church St., as well as one hour prior to the June 8 service at the middle school.

Damian “had a kind and compassionate heart,” family friend Tessa Tripp wrote on a Gofundme campaign for the family. “He enjoyed being out and about on his bike and with his friends.”

The GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $11,700 – or more than half of its $20,000 goal – by the morning of June 6.

“I am creating this fund raiser on behalf of my friend, neighbor and coworker who lost her beautiful boy in a tragic accident,” Tripp wrote. “Damian Brown lived only 14 years but brought a lot of vibrant life to each of those years on earth.”

She mentioned Damian always was there to offer a wave, polite conversation or help when the opportunity arose.

“My last interaction with Damian involved a cat he and his friends tried to rescue after it was hit by a car, just days before his own accident,” Tripp added in the campaign to raise money for final arrangements and bereavement costs. “Please consider offering what you are able and wrap this family in a compassionate embrace of community.”

Leslie Police Chief Evan Bennehoff said the community has come together to offer support for Damian’s family. He said he knows Damian’s family as well as the family of the 15-year-old injured the evening of June 3.

“It’s just very tragic,” Bennehoff said. “Our hearts go out to the families and the residents here.”

Bennehoff said earlier this week that Damian died and his friend was injured after they were playing near power lines.

A steel rod Damian was holding touched an electrical pole, causing him to be electrocuted, Bennehoff said.

An investigation continues.
