Resident ‘lucky to have gotten out’ from West Shore Towers complex fire
Bystanders said they saw and smelled smoke in the area around Gedney Street around the time the fire broke out. As of 11:30, evacuation efforts were still underway, according to Orangetown police.
One resident of the building said that she didn’t smell smoke in the apartment building until she came outside.”All the fire doors had closed by the time I came out so it probably blocked it,” said Annette, an older resident of West Shore Towers. “I live alone and I have a pet, but I’m lucky to have gotten out.” Most of the residents that live in the complex are 60 years old or over, she said.
Dianna Juechter, 24, was driving past the building when she saw tons of fire trucks blocking off the street.”I had just come back from dropping one of my dogs at the vet and I was worried it was my apartment because my other dog is still in there,” she said.Luckily, Juechter said she lives on the bottom floor, which was not harmed by the fire.
