With so many championships at stake and the high school sports season winding down, I’m loading up the Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week ballot.
There are typically five candidates on the ballot, but I’m going with nine this week. I could have added even more, but some outstanding performers have already been Athlete of the Week and some (wink, wink) may have a bigger feature coming in the next few weeks.
Voting is open until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Vote early, vote often.
One last word about “bot voting.” I have no idea what it is, if it’s even a thing or how to stop it. So, don’t waste energy emailing me if you think a person beating your candidate in the poll is using “bot voting.” It’s a big enough honor to be nominated by your friendly neighborhood sports writer for Athlete of the Week. How the voting shakes out isn’t always in one’s control.
I would also like to use this space to thank freelance photographer Tim Arrick for doing the yeoman’s work in the largest photo gallery ever produced by the Livingston Daily, bouncing back and forth along M-59 Saturday to shoot five different games at Hartland and Howell. High school athletes in this area are fortunate to have someone as dedicated as Mr. Adequate shooting most of the events.
You can check out the work of Tim and other photographers in the accompanying gallery:
Mickey Brown, Charyl Stockwell baseball: Brown went 6-for-7 with eight RBIs in victories over Detroit Loyola and Detroit Communication and Media Arts in the district tournament. Brown is hitting .485 with 24 RBIs.
Addison Caldwell, Howell softball: Caldwell was 5-for-8 with five RBIs in district victories over Hartland and Brighton. She drove in the go-ahead run with a single and later hit a solo homer against Hartland.
Jacob Daavettila, Brighton golf: Daavettila tied teammate Grady Bissett for second place with a 73, helping the Bulldogs win their first regional championship since 2008.
Roman Forcia, Hartland baseball: Forcia’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Hartland a 1-0 victory over Howell in the district championship game. Forcia leads Hartland in batting with a .420 average.
Kaydence Hoolesema, Brighton track and field: Hoolsema finished fifth in high jump at the Division 1 finals with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches.
Claire L’Esperance, Hartland soccer: L’Esperance tied the game on a penalty kick and set up the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over unbeaten Bloomfield Hills in the district championship game. L’Esperance has 15 goals and 14 assists.
Jack MacGregor, Howell track and field: MacGregor finished fifth in the 3,200-meter run in with a time of 9 minutes, 13.24 seconds at the Division 1 finals. It’s the second-fastest time in Howell history behind David Mitter’s 9:09.96 in the 2017 state finals.
Olivia Sebestyen, Brighton soccer: Sebestyen scored on two penalty kicks, including the game-winner with 15 minutes left, in a 3-1 victory over Okemos in the district championship game.
Rory Sturos, Howell golf: Sturos birdied his final two holes to pull Howell into a tie with Flushing for the third and final state-qualifying berth in the regional at Davison Country Club. The Highlanders won the tie-breaker to advance. Sturos finished with a 72, tying for fourth among 91 golfers.
