Southwest Airlines passengers will no longer be guaranteed a free checked bag starting May 28.
The airline, which has the most flights at Mitchell International Airport, will charge many of its customers $35 for a first checked bag and $45 for a second checked bag, along with extra fees for overweight or oversized bags.

The policy change is a major reversal for the company, which had long allowed customers to check bags for free.
The airline has also announced plans to begin assigning its passengers seats, bringing an end to its unique open seating policy. A date for those changes to take effect has not been set.
