IHOP opens, Wood's Boot City closing among Lubbock business changes in April

Lubbock saw a mix of business news from restaurants to retail in April. Here’s a look at what opened, closed and confirmed upcoming spots in the Hub City.

In 2023, April saw 18 business announcements reported on by the A-J. April 2024 saw at least 18, again. This most recent April reported at least 12 announcements, which is continuing the downward trend of 2025 so far, according to prior A-J reporting.

Which new restaurants, businesses opened or moved in April 2025?

Field House To Go, Plainview favorite, opens Lubbock lunch option

What: Field House To Go will offer sandwiches, salads, cinnamon rolls and the restaurant’s specialty – loaded baked potatoes. The restaurant’s original location in Plainview has been a community favorite for 44 years.

When: April 24.

Where: 8004 Quaker Ave., Suite C.

IHOP adds location to Covenant Park development near Wolfforth

What: IHOP brought in another restaurant to the Covenant Park shopping area, joining Salata Salad Kitchen and Summer Moon.

When: April 9.

Where: 82nd Street and Marsha Sharp Freeway.

Lonestar Suds Express Car Wash adds location on 50th Street

What: This car wash company opened an additional location.

When: April 24.

Where: 2514 50th St.

Rollin’ Smoke Cigar Lounge rolls into town

What: This new business offers a variety of cigars and cocktails.

When: April 18, grand opening on April 30.

Where: 4801 Frankford Ave., Suite B.

The Rolling Cones ice cream shop opens in former barbecue joint

What: The Rolling Cones, which started as a mobile operation, officially opened its storefront. The shop offers rock and roll-themed specialty cones, ice cream nachos and customizable scoops.

When: April 14.

Where:  3006 34th St., previously Tom & Bingo’s BBQ.

Allsup’s Express shuts down location after less than 3 years of operations

What: Allsup’s Express opened a location by Texas Tech University in August 2022, but suddenly shuttered toward the end of April 2025. Staff were relocated to other Allsup’s locations in town.

When: Late April.

Where: 1113 University Ave.

Home Treasure Gallery quietly closes after 3 years of furniture sales

What: Home Treasure Gallery quietly shut down around April. The furniture store first opened in 2022.

When: April.

Where: 5102 A 60th St.

American Bank of Commerce announces upcoming location in south Lubbock

Announced: American Bank of Commerce broke ground on their new location at 11008 Slide Road on April 30. A temporary building will be installed in mid-summer, and the permanent location is expected to finish construction in the summer of 2026.

Layne’s Chicken still wants Lubbock, here’s how to franchise

Confirmed: Layne’s Chicken, which opened in College Station in 1994, specializes in chicken tenders, with in-house sauces and shakes. The company has been rumored to enter the Lubbock market for several years, and recently announced that they are focusing in development in West Texas. The hunt for a franchisee is on in Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene and San Angelo.

Happy Joe’s Pizza eyes Texas for franchising expansion

Announced: Happy Joe’s, a Midwestern-based pizza franchise with an arcade, has been popping up all over the U.S. Now, the CEO from Texas wants to bring the restaurant to the Lone Star State, specifically small cities and rural towns. Lubbock is included.

PostNet expects to open printing, shipping service in May

Announced: The new shop will offer printing, shipping, packaging, graphic design and other business solutions at 6819 82nd St., Suite 100. It is expected to open in mid-May.

Wood’s Boot City announces Lubbock store will close, offering sales on remaining merchandise

Pending closure: After 47 years of business, the beloved boot shop announced it would be closing its doors at the Lubbock location at 6645 19th St. Wood’s Boot City will continue operations at the Colorado City location. The business posted a statement on social media, stating “the challenges of an uncertain economy and the struggles of small family businesses have made it impossible for us to continue.” A closing date has not been confirmed as of April 30, though an employee said they will be open until inventory has sold out.
