SPRINGVALE TWP. — An Emmet County man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the January shooting death of 34-year-old Joshua VanAllen.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 11, when the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suspicious death in Springvale Township. Based on initial investigations, they found that VanAllen had entered the home of an acquaintance, which led to a struggle and then the fatal shooting.
The sheriff’s office announced on Wednesday, May 7 that John Collin Denny, 35, was charged with one count of homicide — open murder. He also received multiple weapons counts, including felony firearm, possession by a felon and ammunition possession by a felon. He also had a fourth habitual offender notice listed against him.
In the release, Sheriff Matt Leirstein extended his gratitude to the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office for their work in reviewing the months-long investigation.
According to the MiCOURT Case Search, Denny is expected to be arraigned in the 90th District Court in Emmet County on Thursday, May 8.
