Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustine will return to East Lansing for his junior season, rather than sign with the Detroit Red Wings.
Augustine – a Richter Award finalist and First Team All-Big Ten goaltender – had a 2.10 goals against average and a .924 save percentage in 30 starts for the Spartans this past season, going 19-7-4 with three shutouts.
Augustine’s decision was first reported by Mike McMahon of College Hockey News and confirmed by the Lansing State Journal.
Augustine was selected by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft and has won back-to-back gold medals as the starter for Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships as well as back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament titles as MSU’s goaltender.
Augustine is also one of six finalists for the Sullivan Award, given to the most outstanding amateur athlete across all collegiate sports. The ceremony and award announcement is on April 15.
Augustine’s return is a big piece for the Spartans, who keep stability in the net going into the next season. Augustine and the rest of MSU’s squad will have a chip on their shoulder after being bounced early by Cornell in the NCAA Tournament last week.

MSU backup goaltender Luca Di Pasquo entered the transfer portal on Monday evening, making way for incoming freshman Melvin Strahl to come in next season to backup Augustine.
