Marine Prop Riders: Preserving and Promoting Hydroplane Racing Since 1951

Founded in 1951, Marine Prop Riders (MPR) is a Detroit-based club dedicated to fostering inboard hydroplane racing. The organization brings together a diverse group of drivers and owners, ranging from teenagers to individuals in their 70s, who participate in various racing classes, including the 1.0 Liter class and the powerful supercharged big block Grand Prix Hydros.

Beyond racing, MPR members actively contribute to organizing events, serving as drivers, crew members, scorers, referees, rescue personnel, and volunteers. The club’s commitment to community engagement is evident in events like the Mott Lake Regatta, known as the “War of the Wake,” which features hydroplanes from multiple states competing on a one-mile oval course at speeds up to 120 miles per hour. The regatta offers family-friendly activities, including food trucks, a beer tent, a kids’ splash pad, and drivers’ autograph sessions.
