U.S. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald’s recent opinion piece, “When rhetoric devolves, it paves way for violence,” rings hollow given his own record (Sept. 28).
When President Donald Trump incited the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol in an attempt to overturn a lawful election, Fitzgerald refused to criticize him or support impeachment. He instead voted to reject certified results from Arizona and Pennsylvania.

He failed to speak out when fellow Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden spread misinformation and launched personal attacks following the June 14 political assassinations in Minnesota.
More recently, when the Department of Justice removed a 2024 report showing that far-right extremists were responsible for more politically motivated murders than far-left groups — according to its own data — Fitzgerald again said nothing.
If Fitzgerald wants credibility on political violence, he should begin by facing the people he represents — in an in person town hall meeting.
