Colorado State parted ways with former Wisconsin football assistant Jay Norvell on Sunday.
The program made the move after the team fell to 2-5 on the season with a 31-19 loss to Hawaii on Saturday. Norvell’s overall record was 18-26 over 3 1/2 seasons at the helm. His team showed steady progress from 2022 to 2024, improving from 3-9, to 5-7, to an impressive 8-5. It then took a significant step backward to start 2025, prompting the change.
Norvell, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, coached offensive line, wide receiver and tight end at Wisconsin from 1989-94. His other coaching stops include Iowa State (1995-97), Indianapolis Colts (1998-2001), Oakland Raiders (2002-03), Nebraska (2004-06), UCLA (2007), Oklahoma (2008-14), Texas (2015), Arizona State (2016), Nevada (head coach, 2017-22), Colorado State (head coach, 2022-25).
Norvell was one of two notable head coaches dismissed on Sunday, along with Florida’s Billy Napier. They join a growing list that also includes UCLA’s DeShaun Foster, Penn State’s James Franklin, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, Arkansas’ Sam Pittman and Virginia Tech’s Brent Pry.
Wisconsin, despite its ongoing 10-game losing streak to Power Four competition and consecutive shutout losses, has yet to make a coaching change. The team is on the road at Oregon in Week 9.
