Woman rearrested in connection with Wichita Falls fentanyl death

A woman convicted in connection with a fentanyl death in Wichita Falls is back in jail, accused of violating the terms of her probation.

Leigha Ruth Smith was arrested Wednesday and ordered to be held without bail on manslaughter charges, according to Wichita County online jail records.

Suspects are considered innocent unless convicted beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Smith was sentenced to 10 years of probation in November 2023 in connection with the death of 21-year-old Andres Diaz.

Court records show Smith bought counterfeit Percocet from Jasinto Jimenez in July 2022 and gave a pill to Diaz, 21, her boyfriend.

The records say Diaz crushed the pill, snorted it, and died as a result.

The Times Record News reported Smith was originally charged with murder, but she agreed to testify against Jimenez and pleaded guilty to a reduced charged of manslaughter. Jimenez was convicted of murder and sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Smith’s probation was revoked after the Wichita County District Attorney’s Office claimed she submitted a urine sample in January that confirmed positive for marijuana, admitted to marijuana, amphetamine and methamphetamine use in late 2025, failed to report to her supervision officer as directed, failed to provide proof of community service work and remained unemployed.

The DA asks the 89th District Court to send her to prison for 2 to 10 years.
