A spokesperson for United Supermarkets said widespread layoffs at the grocer’s headquarters in Lubbock will not affect San Angelo stores.
Joey Marcades, communications manager for United, said the Market Street and the United Express stores the company operates in San Angelo will not be impacted.
United filed a notice for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification on Nov. 19 with the Texas Workforce Commission saying the company planned to lay off 126 workers.
United also operates stores in Wichita Falls, Abilene, Amarillo and surrounding towns. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Albertsons.
“We will make every effort to place affected team members into alternative positions throughout our organization,” reads the notice, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported Friday. “The restructuring process will be implemented gradually over the coming months, and is expected to conclude on or about July 2026, with remaining team members continuing their employment at this location.”
The Lubbock newspaper reported United issued a statement saying the move is being done as the company makes “a significant investment in our operating systems.”
The operating systems were not detailed in the statement.
The Avalanche-Journal reported that last year the company started implementing Tally, a robot that roamed the stores to track inventory.
At the time, company officials stated that this new system would “complement the work of store team members, not replace them,” the Avalanche-Journal reported.
Strauss Borrelli, a Chicago-based law firm, posted on its website that it is investigating United Supermarkets, contending federal law requires certain employers to notify their employees, in writing, at least 60 days before a plant closing or mass layoff takes effect.
“As a result, we believe United Supermarkets employees may be entitled to 60 days of severance pay and benefits,” the firm said.
