Wichita Falls ISD says active shooter alert was a false alarm

Wichita Falls ISD said on Facebook Friday afternoon that Sheppard Elementary School went into “secure status” after staff reported sounds consistent with gunfire in the housing area near the campus.

By about 12:40 p.m., Wichita Falls police and Wichita County sheriff’s deputies were responding to a call of possible gunshots in the vicinity of Burkburnett Road and Airport Drive, but the reports were apparently a false alarm.

A total of 30 units were on the scene at one time.

“At this time, there is no indication of an active shooter on Sheppard Air Force Base. Because the campus is located on the base, base security initiated a lockdown while the report is investigated,” WFISD said.

The district said “secure” meant students and staff remained inside, instruction continued and exterior doors were secured.

The police and county units began dispersing from the scene about 1:40 p.m.
