No. 3 Texas A&M (11-0, 7-0 SEC) finished the regular season in Kyle Field with a perfect 7-0 record after defeating Samford (1-11) 48-0 behind starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s 120 yards and three touchdowns, paired with junior running back Amari Daniels’ career high 106 rushing yards and his first touchdown of the season.
After mounting a 28-0 lead going into halftime, head coach Mike Elko opted to rest his starters, knowing that the season-finale road test vs. Texas on Friday is much too important to risk potential injuries, especially to Reed, the starting offensive line, and his receiving corps. Still, this was an important game for the coaching staff, who witnessed several young players continue to develop.
Texas A&M’s first-, second-, and third-team defenses allowed an impressive 77 total yards, the program’s lowest mark since 1996. It proved the immense depth on the defensive line, as freshman edge Marco Jones led the game with seven tackles and continued to look like senior edge Cashius Howell’s eventual replacement.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman continues to look like a star in the making, reeling in a 58-yard touchdown from Marcel Reed after his red zone score in the first quarter, and has now recorded an impressive 442 yards and five touchdowns this season.
Before taking on the Longhorns, Texas defeated Arkansas 52-37, and will need to beat Texas A&M and receive a lot of help to have a shot at the CFP. Elsewhere in the SEC, Oklahoma took care of Missouri and is in a great position to make the College Football Playoff, with a spot guaranteed if the Sooners defeat LSU on Saturday.
