Texas A&M head coach hints at more recruiting news as Aggie momentum continues

After landing a commitment from the No. 2 running back in the country earlier this week, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko hinted at more good news in recruiting during Coach’s Night in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday.

The announcement from KJ Edwards on Tuesday sparked much excitement from the Aggie fan base this week, as the program moved to No. 2 on 247Sports Recruiting Rankings. According to Elko, this is just the beginning of what could be a huge week for the Aggies on the recruiting trail.

“I think the momentum is really good. I think we are going to have a really good week. Should be a really, really good week,” Elko told the Dallas A&M Club.

The week went from good to great when news broke on Thursday afternoon that the Aggies landed five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington over the Oregon Ducks. Arrington is currently ranked as the No. 1 athlete in the country and the No. 1 player in California, according to 247Sports.

If this were any sign of how the rest of the week will go, the program could be ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class of 2026 come Monday morning.

Landing commitments from superstar athletes like Arrington and Edwards is a testament to the job Elko and company are doing, entering his second year at the helm for the Aggies.

In the NIL era of college football, it is arguably more difficult than ever to land top-ranked recruits straight out of high school like Elko has done this offseason. Recruiting takes being personable with the athlete and making them believe in what the program wants to accomplish.

He did just that with Edwards, as Elko gathered the recruits’ grandparents to surprise the athlete when he came down to Bryan-College Station, Texas, for his official visit.

“So when we came down this weekend, it was originally supposed to be me, mom, dad, my sister, my younger brother and my auntie. Once we got out there, coach Trooper and coach Elko surprised us with my grandparents. They had reached out to them, and we didn’t know anything about it, so when we saw them, we were surpsied,” Edwards said.

As Texas A&M continues to climb the rankings, the future glistens like a diamond for Elko and company. The last time the Aggies were ranked as the No. 1 recruiting class in the country was under former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher in 2022.
