Texas A&M survived a scoring surge from Montana on Tuesday to pick up its third victory and will look to make it two in a row when it faces the Manhattan Jaspers (3-2), who are coming off a win over Mississippi Valley State.
In the last two games, the Aggies have made a few strides in playing a full 40 minutes against a quality opponent. However, they are still missing one of their top scorers, Mackenzie Mgbako, who should be able to help with some of the late scoring lulls in the game.
Defense is leaving something to be desired, and the Jaspers are averaging 84.6 points per game while shooting from the three-point line at a solid .373 clip. If A&M can play this game like they did in the first 30 minutes against Montana, then I have no worries. But there is a world where Manhattan catches fire against an Aggie team that is still trying to find its footing as a unit. It’s a learning process, and there is a lot of basketball left to be played. However, they need to make significant strides in these few games to catch their groove before SEC play begins.
This will be the fourth meeting between the programs, with the Aggies winning the last matchup in 2010, 74-45, at a neutral site in Orlando, Florida. A&M leads the series 2-1 and hopes to make it 3-1 after the game concludes at Reed Arena on Friday night.
