MassMu’s Brown Bag Lunch—Susan Mentrak Talks about Juxtaposed
Susan Mentrak, guest curator of “Juxtaposed: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” – the Massillon Museum’s current main gallery exhibition – will speak June 24 at the museum’s Brown Bag Lunch.
The program will begin at 12:10 p.m. and conclude about 12:50 p.m. Brown Bag Lunch events are free and open to everyone with no reservations required.
“Juxtaposed” celebrates diverse styles from high realism to abstract expressionism, illustrating the evolution of art through educational legacies. Artwork by 13 artists echo past teachings, inspiring today’s creators and ensuring that knowledge passes to future generations, fostering ongoing learning, creation, and community engagement.
“Juxtaposed” artists have connections to Columbus College of Art & Design, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Kent State University and University of Akron. A graduate of CCAD, Mentrak has included six of her own pieces in the exhibition. They incorporate narrative and graphic design to explore how we see the world and how the world sees us through layers that we place and layers that are placed onto us.
Susan Mentrak, a Canton resident who is the Massillon Museum’s ceramic studio manager, majored in illustration and graduated in 1992 from CCAD. Her designs have been seen in Nordstrom, “New York Times,” Lark Books, Inc.com, “Little Thing,” “Stuffed” and “Doll Collector” magazines. In 2016, she began working primarily in ceramics.
The Brown Bag Lunch series is sponsored by Massillon/North Canton Elks Lodge 2029. The Massillon Museum is grateful for operating support from Ohio Arts Council, ArtsinStark, and the citizens of Massillon, as well as marketing support from Visit Canton. Brown Bag Lunches are funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
