MASSILLON – Part of a southeast side road is in line for a major upgrade, as City Council unanimously authorized the bidding process for a new project.
Council’s 8-0 approval June 16 triggers an estimated $330,000 improvement effort for University Drive SE.
Work is to run approximately 1,600 feet — from Nave Road SE to about Malone Avenue SE — and get underway in late summer or fall.
The bulk of the upgrade is for street resurfacing, according to City Engineer Alex Pitts.
“Basically, we’re milling out the concrete from the road and repaving it with new asphalt,” Pitts said.
University Drive is probably the second-most requested street by residents to be resurfaced in Massillon, said Pitts, noting that Warmington Road SW receives the most queries.
Funding for the University Drive project comes via the municipal street maintenance and repair fund.
Massillon council OKs economic grant for recycling company
City Council also approved 8-0 a $5,000 economic inducement grant for PolyKinetix, a recycling company that’s opening a production site on the northwest side.
The company takes discarded rubber, plastics and Styrofoam to make new materials. Grant funds are to assist with equipment and relocation expenses.
PolyKinetix is leasing a 11,000-square-foot warehouse at 240 Sixth St. NW. The shop is on the opposite side of Ring Masters and is the company’s first production center. The site is the former home to Eaton electric company.
Inducement grants are oftentimes awarded by the city of Massillon to new or existing businesses for promoting economic development, expansion and job creation. Funds are provided for suitable projects, as separate dollar amounts can range from $1,000 to around $15,000.
