NORTH CANTON ‒ The city school district is honoring two superstar Viking athletes by renaming the new Throws Park in their honor.
The Board of Education earlier this month approved changing the name of Throws Park to Logan-Muffet Throws Park. The park is located south of the lacrosse field and is used for shot put and discus sports.
Hoover graduates Jud Logan, 1977, and Ashley Muffet-Kovacs, 2005, were champion athletes at Hoover, with Logan lettering three times in track and field and two times in football, and Muffet-Kovacs was a three-time state champion in shot put.
Logan set the school record for discus throw of 171 feet, 11 inches, which stands today. He went on to become a four-time U.S. Olympic team member and competed in the Pan-Am Games, Goodwill Games and World Championships. He was a track and field coach at Ashland University. Logan died in January 2022.
When attending college at the University of Kentucky and The Ohio State University, Muffet-Kovacs was a four-time All-American and 11-time All-Southeastern Conference selection. She participated in two U.S. Olympic trials in 2008 and 2012.
After her successful time as a collegiate thrower, she served as a track and field coach at Murray State, Western Kentucky and Ohio State. Muffet-Kovacs was an assistant coach and recruiter coordinator for Ohio State. She is currently coaching her husband, Joe, who has won the silver medal in the shot put at three Olympic Games.
“Jud Logan and Ashley Muffet-Kovacs represent the best of what it means to be a Hoover Viking,” Superintendent Tim Walker said.
“While many of their accomplishments may never be matched by future Vikings, it will be their impact on the next generation that will be their greatest legacy.”
