Former Olentangy High School quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer will make his first start for Penn State at quarterback on Oct. 18 against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
A redshirt freshman, Grunkemeyer replaces Drew Allar, who has a broken left ankle and is out for the remainder of the season.
Penn State recently fired head coach James Franklin following a three-game skid against Oregon and two unranked opponents in UCLA and Northwestern.
Grunkemeyer has thrown 11 passes this season, completing eight for 105 yards and a touchdown.
At Olentangy, Grunkemeyer went 11-2 as a senior, passing for 3,517 yards, 39 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 66.3% completion rate.
