Guardians prospect Chase DeLauter undergoes surgery for broken hamate bone

CLEVELAND — Guardians outfield prospect Chase DeLauter, who already has a checkered injury past, will again be sidelined for several weeks as his road to the majors continues to be blocked.

DeLauter underwent surgery for a broken hamate bone in his right hand/wrist and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, according to an update from the club. DeLauter sought a second opinion from Dr. Thomas Graham in Philadelphia and, after an MRI, a hook of the hamate bone was confirmed, which led to a surgical recommendation.

That injury typically comes with a six- to eight-week timeframe for a return to play. Jose Ramirez had a similar injury in 2019.

The surgery leaves only a small chance DeLauter could reach the majors this season in what has been yet another year full of frustration and injury bad luck. After noting his only goal this season was to stay healthy, he underwent sports hernia surgery in the spring.

DeLauter is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Guardians system and the No. 31 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. When on the field, DeLauter posted an .859 OPS and reached base in all 34 games he played with Triple-A Columbus.
