A Delaware man who fatally shot his parents will spend nearly four decades in prison before being eligible to ask for an early release.
Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge Marianne Hemmeter sentenced 27-year-old Mohamed Lamin Kandeh on Feb. 23 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 39 years.
Hemmeter found Kandeh guilty on Dec. 17 of murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the September 2023 killings of his father, 61-year-old Mohamed Alusine Kandeh and his mother, 60-year-old Bintu Kandeh. The younger Kandeh opted for a bench trial instead of a jury trial.
According to court records, a family member called Delaware police after the Kandehs did not meet them that day as had been planned. Delaware police went to the family home on the 200 block of Bristol Drive and found the Kandehs fatally shot inside. Their son was no longer at the house.
The younger Kandeh was arrested the next day after being pulled over by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Court records say the younger Kandeh shot both of his parents multiple times sometime between 10:45 p.m. on Sept. 2, 2023 and 3 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2023. A gun and ammunition Kandeh had with him when he was arrested matched evidence at the crime scene.
According to records, the younger Kandeh had threatened his father in the past, resulting in a misdemeanor charge after he pointed a gun at his father’s head.
The younger Kandeh’s competence to stand trial was evaluated several times over the duration of his case. According to court records, he underwent treatment for several months to ensure he could understand the court proceedings.
