College updates of Matt Kling with Sacred Heart football and more

Matt Kling is hoping for a perfect ending in his final game kicking for the Sacred Heart football team.

The graduate student, a 6-foot-1, 201-pounder from Canton Central Catholic High School, has connected on 29 extra points without a miss for the Connecticut-based Pioneers. He’s also 9-for-12 in field goals with the longest 49 yards and is second on the team in scoring with 65 points. And he is averaging 60.8 yards on 51 kickoffs with 25 touchbacks.

Kling had a big performance last season when he was tied for the scoring lead with 52 points, going 22-for-23 in extra points and 10-for-12 in field goals. He didn’t see action in 2023 but kicked off and played defense in 2022.

 Sacred Heart takes an 8-3 record into Saturday’s game at Villanova.

Sydney Wake (Jackson)

The 5-11 junior right side had a standout effort to lead the Gannon women’s volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over West Chester in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Association Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 18. She had a career-high 22 kills in the match. Wake leads the team in kills with 285 and points with 326.5 and has 99 digs and 62.0 total blocks. The Golden Knights are ranked first in the final Division II Atlantic Region poll with a 23-6 record heading into the semifinals and finals this weekend.

Nolan Hendricks (Massillon)

The true freshman kicker did it all for the Wooster football team (4-4 overall, 3-3 North Coast Athletic Conference). Hendricks was 29-for-29 on extra points, kicked two field goals and averaged 36.49 punting and 53.7 on kickoffs.

Christian Kring (Massillon)

The 5-10 junior linebacker a solid year on defense for the Wooster football team. He made 38 tackles, with 6.5 yards for losses and three sacks.

Nash Minor (Marlington)

The sophomore had a big effort for the winning Johns Hopkins men’s cross country team at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 15, in Newville, Pa. Minor was eighth out of 218 runners with an 8,000-meter time of 25:28.3. He was the sixth finisher for the team, but he didn’t count in the final scoring as the Blue Jays had five runners in the first seven places to place first among the 35-team field with 23 points.

Livi Miller (Hoover)

 The 5-11 junior middle hitter was the only player on the Ashland women’s volleyball team to play in all 94 sets. She started 35 pf 36 matches and was second on the team in total blocks with 67.0 and fourth in kills with 155. She also had 20 digs and a solid .264 attack rate. The Eagles finished 13-14 overall and 8-8 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

CJ Dawson (Green)

The 6-4, 310-pound redshirt senior is starting on the offensive line for the Gardner-Webb (N.C.) football team (7-4, 4-2 OVC-Big South). Dawson has helped the team average 400.1 yards per game in total offense, 231.9 passing and 169.0 rushing. He saw limited action last season after transferring from Tiffin.

Bobby Smart (Hoover)

The 5-10 redshirt junior is the top kicker on the Dayton football team (6-4, 4-3 Pioneer Football League). Smart has connected on 24 of 26 extra points and has hit a pair of field goals, from 21 and 37 yards. He kicked the 37-yard field goal with 3:28 remaining to give Dayton a 17-14 victory over Robert Morris on Sept. 20.

Jillian Fellers (Marlington)

The 5-10 senior outside hitter was named first-team All-OAC after a strong season with the Marietta women’s volleyball team (17-8). Fellers had 17 digs and 12 kills the team’s season-ending match, her 12th double-double of the season. She finished with 320 kills, 306 digs, 36.0 total blocks and 32 service aces.

Grant Blake (Jackson)

The 5-11 freshman defender was named to second-team North Coast Athletic Conference for his play with the Kenyon men’s soccer team. Blake had a goal and an assist this season. The goal was the only score in a 1-0 victory over Franciscan. He assisted on the only goal in the 1-0 victory against Hanover. On defense, he helped the Owls hold foes to 18 goals in 18 games with six shutouts. Kenyon finished 7-4-7 overall and 3-2-3 in NCAC games.

Emma King (Manchester)

The senior wrapped her season with the Akron women’s soccer team in a big way. She had the winning goal and an assist in a 3-0 Mid-American Conference home win on Oct. 29. It was her second game-winning goal of the season. King finished with four goals and three assists for the Zips who finished 5-9-4 overall and 2-7-3 in MAC play. In 58 career games, she had 14 goals and seven assists for 35 points and four game-winners.

Angela Roshak (Hoover)

The 6-2 senior is starting at center for the Mount Vernon Nazarene women’s basketball team (4-4). Roshak is averaging 10.8 points and 6.9 rebounds with 21 blocked shots, 13 assists and nine steals. She had her best game in an 84-61 victory over West Virginia Tech on Nov. 8 with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
