Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Tyrese Proctor lift Cavs to 27-24 lead vs. L.A. Clippers at the end of the first quarter

Two young Cavs players — forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin and guard Tyrese Proctor — combined to elevate the Cavaliers to a 27-24 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Tomlin threw down a fast-break dunk, with forward Dean Wade stealing the ball and dishing out an assist to Tomlin with 29.1 seconds left. Then Tomlin blocked Clippers guard James Harden’s attempted layup, and Proctor made a 3-pointer during the ensuing possession with 0.8 seconds left.

Cavs honor soon-to-be retired NBA guard Chris Paul

With 2:15 left in the first quarter, the Cavs gave Clippers guard Chris Paul a shout-out on their video boards and called him an all-time great. Paul received applause and gestured to the Cleveland crowd.

The moment stemmed from Paul announcing on Nov. 22 he will retire after this season.

Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell had a good idea, but Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley wasn’t ready for the ball

With 2:32 left in the first quarter, the Cavs had an especially regrettable turnover. Guard Donovan Mitchell was wide open on the left wing for a 3-pointer, but he tried to pass to forward Evan Mobley, who was left alone next to the basket. Here’s the problem: Mobley wasn’t looking for the ball, and it flew out of bounds.

In the first quarter, the Cavs had six turnovers, and the Clippers had four.

LA Clippers lead Cleveland Cavaliers 22-16 with 3:44 left in the first quarter

Cavs forward Evan Mobley has struggled at the free-throw line this season, and the problem reared its ugly head when he missed two foul shots with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Mobley entered the game against the Clippers with a free-throw percentage of 60.7 this year.

However, Mobley made an even easier shot — a dunk on an assist from point guard Darius Garland on a pick-and-roll. The dunk accounted for Mobley’s first points of the game.

The Clippers responded by calling timeout with a 22-16 lead and 3:44 left in the first quarter.

Cavs trail Clippers with 15-10 with 6:33 left in the first quarter

Coming off a 55-point performance on Nov. 22 against the Charlotte Hornets, Clippers guard James Harden got the scoring going. With 10:58 left in the first quarter, he produced a three-point play against Cavs wing Jaylon Tyson. The Clippers led 3-0 until Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell answered with a 3-pointer from the right wing on the next possession.

Cavs wing De’Andre Hunter’s 3-pointer cut Cavs’ deficit to 7-6 with 9:37 remaining in the opening quarter. Cavs point guard Darius Garland had an assist on the play.

The Cavs trailed 15-10, though, during a Cleveland timeout with 6:33 left in the first quarter. Roughly midway through the first quarter, Harden and Mitchell led their teams with five points apiece.

The first players off the bench for the shorthanded Cavs were rookie guard Tyrese Proctor and forward Dean Wade. They were substituted for Mitchell and forward Evan Mobley with 7:15 left in the first quarter.

Below is some pregame information.
